Central Advisory and Warning System (CAWS) (note 1) is designed to warn the crew of conditions that may adversely affect aircraft operations. The system consists of hardware and electronics that provide the crew with both visual and aural cues when a system exceeds predefined operating limits. The primary system's visual cues consist of two master alarm lights, and a 42-light incandescent array panel. The aural cue is sent to the communications system for distribution to flight crew headsets or speaker boxes.
The (CAWS) system interfaces with the power units, data processing system, environmental cabin control, electrical power system, flight control system, guidance and navigation system and the hydraulics system.
Visual cues for the flight crew consist of one red master warning alarm push button light and one orange master caution alarm push button light indicators (note 2) on each side of the panel above the EADI. Also there is the 42-light (red, orange, green and blue) (CAWS) incandescent light array panel on the lower glare panel to the right of the gear handle.
Annunciator lights provide visual indications of the status of the aircraft systems. The annunciator lights used for the PC12 panel (CAWS) are classified as emergency, warning and caution and advisory. Emergency annunciators are red; cautions and warning are orange; and advisory may be green (normal configuration status) or blue (special applications). Annunciator lighting is provided by incandescent lamps that illuminate the lens area of the annunciators. Most annunciators are driven by an annunciator control assembly that controls the illumination of the lights during a normal or test input and the brightness level.
If the parameter has exceeded its limits, it will turn on the (CAWS) tone (note 3), light the appropriate (CAWS) light on 42-light array panel, illuminate one or both of the master alarm push button light indicators and store the parameter in memory. The (CAWS) tone for that indicator can be silenced (including the systems management tone) and the master alarm light extinguished by depressing (left mouse click) any one of the lighted master alarm push button light indicators; however, the faulty condition indicated on the (CAWS) 42-light array panel will remain illuminated until the out-of-tolerance condition is corrected.
